Castlecroft 1848 Renovation
The East Lancashire Railway occupied the Castlecroft sheds on a pepper corn rent from Bury Council in 1972.This magnificent shed formed a base for the preservation society to develop, and as cover for the renovation of steam and diesel locomotives. The shed was originally built for the distribution of goods into the town of Bury, and for receiving of goods for distribution around the world. It survived as such for well over a century. Time took its toll on this structure, and eventually it had to be closed to the public, because the roof was beginning to collapse. Funding from the North West Development Agency, The National Lottery, Bury Council, PEC Biffaward, and public donations allowed the renovation to commence under the experienced eye of Irwins Ltd (of Leeds). Our cameras visited the renovation monthly, and were able to see some of the finest craftsmanship available in the field of modern renovation in action. The result is a superb museum that was officially opened on 26th March 2010 by HRH the Duke of Gloucester.
