E.L.R. Diesel Event July 2008
This year a nine day event was scheduled. The first weekend was centred around the 1960’s with classic steam and diesel haulage. The main diesel event started on the Monday with haulage behind 37906, 5054 and 8087, the last train of the day being double headed with the 20 and the 37. Tuesday blasted into view with some summer sunshine, and haulage behind a visiting 45041 ‘Royal Tank Regiment’, a very clagy 37901, 40145, 50015 Valiant and 47402.
Wednesday was the only day that 57307 ‘Lady Penelope’ ran, along with the resident DMU from the NRM, and our own 1305. D335 also committed to one round trip. The E.L.R. has some major diesel renovation in progress, a short interlude is taken to look at D8233, and its new engine, and our well advanced teddy bear. The new arrival of W55001 is featured and only leaves us asking when can we get a run behind her. Thursday was another good weather day after the departure of 55022 Royal Scots Grey on display, after its many main line appearances, along with double heading 37’s and other English Electric goodies.
Friday witnessed some heavy rain as a precursor to the weekend. We took the advantage of visiting Rammy box and catching up on the track circuit displays. 5054 ran return to Rammy and is followed by D335 and 37906.
The MEGA MIX weekend is seen in all its superb details, and with 3 train running AND shuttles to Rammy sidings there is plenty to indulge the enthusiast! The first outing of D1023 Western Fusilier’, double heading 37’s and 31108 in gleaming condition. The Saturday evening run with triple heading 37’s with D1023 on the tail is captured at Burrs, The Hump and over the Motorway.
The main line ventures of 40145 are captured locally with its one and only run this year on the Cotton Mill Express. Views of E.L.R. roaring up Miles Platting Bank, coasting past Moses Gate, and cruising through Rochdale just serve to show the majesty of the 40’s.
