E.L.R. Wartime Weekend 1999
Saturday 27 May 1940 - Our wartime correspondent was employed to record the events of the railway through the day. The movement of evacuees by rail is recorded, along with the battle at Falaise, in this 60th anniversary year of Dunkirk. A small display of preserved military vehicles is seen at Bury, and the goods trains running. The Blitz Ball at the Elizabethan Suite Bury was recorded along with the many soldiers home on leave, and the Tommy Lowe Big Band.
Sunday 28 May 1940 - This was our chance to battle once more for the station at Falaise (Ramsbottom in disguise), and an excellent display was put on by the re-enactment groups taking part. A celebratory NAFFI party was held in the café at Bury, and the first ever fashion show 1940’s style was held in Ramsbottom by the Civilians at War Society, this is well worth watching for the quality of modelling, and the many types of clothes on display.
Monday 29 May 1940.. A celebration of the end of the war featuring the many bands who played on Bury station, and the Grand Finale with a parade of colours, vehicles, and speeches from assembled dignitaries. The appearance of the Southern Region locomotive ‘Taw Valley’ certainly gave an enhanced war time feel to the day.
Many people and many groups took part in our three day event, one of the most pervasive being Mr Paul Harper the ENSA entertainer. Many re-enactment societies, and individuals visited the E.L.R. and on any day you could easily have considered yourself back in the shadow of war that was Great Britain in the 1940’s. I would like to thank all the photographers and videographers that have contributed to this video.
