E.L.R. Wartime Weekend May 2004
Burtonwood Veterans Association - Real stories from the forties are now rare, but this opportunity to meet the real people of that era was taken by AVV. Their memories of times through the war years are varied, some so far from home, and others from just up the Irwell Valley. Here is the reality of life in war-time Britain, told by those who lived it.
Saturday 29th May 1940 - This hugely popular event started, with the arrival of many of the re-enactment people, many of whom are captured on this video. Most impressive on that day was the battle at Rawtenstall with German forces versus the Allies. The military vehicles in Bury are also recorded, as is the American Army encampment in Irwell Vale.
Sunday 30th May 1940 - Ramsbottom became the centre piece for the day, with the first ever War Time Wedding held at the Church on Market street, very well attended. Following their departure for honeymoon on our authentic L.M.S. Jubilee class steam loco Leander, it was time for our battle re-enactment on the smaller platforms of Ramsbottom Station.
Bank Holiday Monday 31st May 1940 - Interactive 1940’s Magistrates overcome a bigamous situation at Rawtestall. Colourful stalls filled the Castle Armoury at Bury with authentic war-time memorabilia, and our regular Parade / Service on Bolton Street Station was well attended. G.I.Jive, and 40’s dancing on Platform 3, followed by the Middleton Brass Band and community singing will get your feet tapping and you singing along with gusto.
The D-Day invasion had its 60th anniversary this year, to support this views of the Atlantic Fortress built in Guernsey are shown.
