Leander Reborn In Bury

5690 ‘Leander’ Reborn in Bury Stannier Jubilee L..M.S. 5690 ‘Leander’ arrived at Bury in 1995, for a complex rebuilding programme to be undertaken by the dedicated Beet family, and friends. First built in 1936, at Crewe this class of locomotive remained the workhorse of the L.M.S. throughout the war years, and until withdrawal in the late 1960’s. This particular locomotive was withdrawn in July 1964, and has had a distinguished career last appearing in 1985, before retiring to the Sevem Valley Railway. This locomotive gives little away in terms of its engineering detail, and many of the innovative details which make this engine a classic, are hidden from view. Atlantic Video View has revisited the workshops on many occasions throughout the rebuild of the engine, and much detail has been captured in this programme for you to enjoy. Details of the complete strip down, boiler, cab, frames, cylinders and wheels give a wonderful insight into the mechanics of this engine, and most L.M.S. engines of this era.

Our dedicated team of camera men also ventured onto the East Lancashire Railway, and captured Leander being put through its paces over the Metrolink ‘hump’on the Heywood branch. In the E.L.R’s January & February steam events the locomotive is also captured regaining its feet. The loco is to be shown along other L.M.S. favourites at the Crew open day in May 2003.
