Steam On The E.L.R. June 2004 - April 2005

Our programme begins with the increase in operational services now on the E.L.R. 61572 on diners, 5690 and 68030 on mid week summer services. The lack of steam availability in June meant no steam event. The rebuilding of 71000 the ‘Duke of Gloucester’ over the last 7 years is reviewed as we see it out on proving runs on the WCML. and at Blackburn. Agecroft black 5 45337 returned to the E..L.R and following re-tyring, it was seen operating. The October steam event suffered from lack of steam with 3690 working on the Bluebell Railway and 7100 have to be retired early in the event and only 76079 and 61264 remaining in service until the Sunday when 44996 was able to help out. Riley black 5 has been masquerading as 44996 for ‘Bobs Scottish Steam Bash’, and views from this area supplied by Mr Stewart Lomas. 45407 and 76079 returned home for servicing, both taking part in Xmas services, but most significantly 45407 was renamed - Lancashire Fusilier - in a dedication on Bury Station.

A mild winter led to a glorious January steam event with 45407, 45337, 76079, 71000 and 61264 completing the line up. The 4F had completed its major overhaul at Crewe and its contracted for running throughout the year on the E.L.R. and a static appearance was made in platform 4 for viewing. The February steam event was hastily strung together, in the hope that the arrival of 34067 Tangmere could be capitalised upon. Sadly the Bulleid missed out with major firebox stay corrosion and the event was lead by 71000 and 45337 complete with Ayrshire Yeomanry name plates. The mild weather lead to a spectacular photo charter with 44422 in late March... billed as the last freight charter on the E.L.R ..... only time will tell.

The main April steam event swept all others away in its wake, with the 4F, and Jinty 47833 and 9F making premier appearances. The majesty of the pacifics was again born by 71000 the Duke of Gloucester. Repairs to 620] ‘Pri11cess Elizabeth are featured with repairs and developments to many other projects in the Bury Steam sheds.
