Tangmere Reborn In Bury

Bullied Pacific 34067 'Tangmere' arrived at Bury in 1996, for a complex rebuilding programme to be undertaken by the maestro of locomotive re-builds Mr Ian Riley. The smooth streamlined profile of this loco, is a tribute to its designer Mr Bullied. First built in 1947, this class of locomotive remained the workhorse of the south throughout the war years, and until withdrawal in the late 1960's. This particular locomotive was withdrawn in November 1963, and languished at Woodhams yard until 1981, when it was retrieved by John Bunch, Norman Atherden and Brian Pickett.

This robust streamlined locomotive gives little away in terms of its engineering detail, and many of the innovative details which make this engine a classic, are hidden from view. Atlantic Video View has revisited the workshops on many occasions throughout the rebuild of the engine, and much of the Bullied detail has been captured in this programme for you to enjoy. Details of the complete strip down, boiler, oil bath, frames and wheels give a wonderful insight into the mechanics of the engine.

Our dedicated team of camera men also ventured onto the main line when ‘Tangmere’ stepped out for its testing programme, and its first ill-fated mainline run. Wonderful views of this majestic pacific on the West Coast Main Line, and its inclusion in the East Lancashire Railway 2003 steam events is covered in detail.
