E.L.R. Wartime Weekend May 2005
60th Anniversary of VE and VJ day. The Royal British Legion has had a year long campaign reminding people to say THANKS to those who fought in WWII. This celebration was supported by the National Lottery, and grants had been awarded to allow for celebrations along the lines of VE and VJ day. Nationally this was seen on T.V. and over the whole country many events such as our War Weekend benefited from grant awards.
Saturday 28th May 1940 - This hugely popular event started with the arrival of many of the re-enactment people, many of whom are captured on this video. Most impressive on that day was the battle at Rawtenstall with German forces versus the Allies. St Pauls Church in Rantsbottom opened its doors for another 1940's wedding, and lrwell Vale features heavily this year with two Military Camps. That`s not to forget the vintage steam traction.
Sunday 29th May 1940 - Irwell vale, and a church service began the day. The two battle scenes at Rawtenstall were repeated with avid interest from all onlookers. The local Parade and service in Bury took place on the Car Park this year, giving everyone a better view of the participants. This spectacle is well covered by the two cameras of our dedicated team. The large amount of travelling re-enactment people made today one of the most convincing seen yet.
Bank Holiday Monday 31st May 1940 - The over-bridge at Bury station was crammed with stalls selling much sought after 40's memorabilia and a repeat of last years colourful stalls filled the Castle Armoury at Bury with authentic war-time memorabilia. Our church hall was in use for a christening. The signing of the armistice at Irwell Vale brought many stares as captured German Officers were paraded to their inevitable fate. G.l.Jive, and 40`s dancing on Bury car park, followed by the Fusiliers Brass Band and community singing will get your feet tapping and you singing along with gusto.
The D-Day invasion had its 60th anniversary this year, to support this views of the Atlantic Fortress built in Guernsey are shown.
